Places and stores to visit in the Rotterdam area

  • Hello,

I was wondering if some of our Dutch railroading friends could suggest some good railroad related things to see in the area. I will be in the Rotterdam area for two weeks beginning March 18th. I plan to visit the museum in Utrecht, pick up some hobby supplies at Meijer en Blessing and go to the big display near Rotterdam Centraal. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thank you, all the best and tot ziens!

  • Mike,

concerning your mentioned 'big display', you mean the ?

At this time of the year the preserved lines at Ouddorp, Valkenburg and Hoorn do not offer a train service, sadly.

But there is a tramway museum in Amsterdam.

The museum at Utrecht is worth the visit, especially as it is quite near to Rotterdam.

If you go to Den Haag as well and you are interested in railway books:

Boekhandel De Vries Van Stockum | Verhalen beginnen hier

It is a large book shop.

I haven't been there yet, but I was told it is quite good.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Dirk,

That is it, Miniworld Rotterdam, I was there in August and really enjoyed it. Nice cafe too!

I will check out the bookstore in the Hague, there is also one near the Stadhuis in Rotterdam that was pretty good.

Do you know if there will be any exhbitions or 'Borsen' the end of March?

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Mike

depending on your time and radius of movement I suggest

    The modeltrain museum in Sneek

Modeltrain store Huider in Heerhugowaard mainly H0 but some material like colors, tools and brass (ahh, Dirk was faster 😊 )

Museums trains, steam and or diesel:

-RTM in Ouddorp (lot of different material in the "Roundhouse", 1062 mm gauge), with a little luck you can visit the garage with interesting explanation of the current repairs. Last time it was the riveted original historic water tower.

-Museum line GOES steam train, very nice locos I remember

-Steam train HOORN MEDEMBLICK with historical stations, stuff and staff, possible tour with steam ship back to starting point. The station stops were very entertaining.

If it may be something else than trains I suggest the maritime museum in Den Helder, with modern part with some very nice ship models near the visitable big submarine ship and the historic museum (different building) with intresting ancient technical exhibition.

and on your way back from there visit for good ice cream:

IJssalon de Schepper in Julianadorp Navigate 52,8979267, 4,7533146

    Enjoy the trip!!

    Viel Spaß beim Basteln

    Gruß Olli

  • I just want to thank everyone for their great suggestions! I know I will return home with a suitcase full of hobby supplies, books and trains plus some wonderful memories!

    Again, thank you everyone!

  • 'Hi Mike.

    You mentioned:

    > I know I will return home with a suitcase full of hobby supplies, books and trains [...]

Please take some photos afterwards, and let us know about your new treasures...

  • Well, I made it home and had a wonderful two weeks visiting my daughter in Rotterdam! The weather was unbelievably good the first week and we took trips to Gouda, Amsterdam, Leiden, Delft, Keukenhof, Utrecht (city and railway museum) plus numerous sites in and around Rotterdam.

To all who made suggestions of what to do and where to go, I say thank you. Rotterdam Centraal is truly an archtectural gem and transport in South Holland is fast, easy, clean and efficient. I did not make it to every suggested site and some were not yet open for the season, so I can save these for a later trip.

Below are some pictures, just a few of the hundreds I took.

    Dankjewel and all the best,
